Gum (gingival) recession is a common problem that threatens the longevity of the teeth. By definition, any gum recession is a sign of bone loss. It can be the result of excessive brushing, clenching, grinding, and periodontal infection. Treatment of gum recession has improved significantly with the advent of minimally invasive procedures and the use of acellular dermal grafts. Contrary to common believe, the reason to treat gum recession is not only for cosmetics, but rather to protect the bone support and prevent further gum and bone loss. It is beneficial to address esthetic concerns early, since it will be difficult to achieve a pleasing result if too much bone loss was allowed to occur before treatment.
